During the HackerSpaceFestival 2008, we installed a room with a TES92 ElectroSmog FieldMeter (50MHz – 3.5GHz) to be used to measure the Magnetic Field from different cellphones during a call. The people were asked to make a call with their cellphone at less than 5 cms from the field meter. The TES 92 had been verified using a spectrum analyzer and modulation generator at 1v/m. The EU regulation usually make the measurement using W/kg.

Please find below the results from the different cellphones :

The Maker Faire is an event that occurs every six month and alternate between San Mateo and Austin, Texas. It is organized by the famous Make magazine http://makezine.com/ .

The goal of the event is to be a mix of Arts, Crafts, Engineering, Green Tech, Music, Science & Technology.

I was a lucky guy to be here for the Maker Faire in San Mateo, a city in the Silicon Valley between San Francisco & San Jose. The weather was perfect, sunny, perfect temperature.

HSFpicWhat would the Internet look like without hackers? What would
computing look like without free and open source software? What would
the culture look like with DRM and closed media channels everywhere?
Where do art and technology merge? Would Gilbert Simondon be happy if
he were alive today? Many questions will be debated during the first
Hacker Space Fest from the 16th to the 22nd June 2008 near Paris, in
the industrial outskirts of Vitry-sur-Seine.

The first Hacker Space Fest (HSF) will be held at the /tmp/lab near
Paris, France in June 2008. The goal of this festival is to bring
together people from many cultural and technological backgrounds and
from different Hacker Spaces and Autonomous zones in France and
Europe (and from beyond, if they can attend) to share and show what’s
going on.

Sugar on EEE pc using XubuntuAfter the BackTrack3 Live SD card for EEE, I continued the distribution exploration with the OLPC (One Laptop Per Child) operating system on their brand new XO laptops and their slick and simple GUI called Sugar.

Before jumping into “did this, done that”, current advances in SD card and USB memory sticks sizes, bootable distribution and virtualization take computing to a different level.

Remember when you use to insert a MSDOS diskette into your computer to boot it? Each new operating system could be booted on the same old PC by merely changing the diskette and rebooting? Of course, there were not as many OS as now. This is where the fun begin.

Now, a child can have “his own computer” by just possessing a SD-card. All his changes to his environment will be persistent. He will be able to add programs without depending or affecting anyone. 2 Gb SD card are as cheap as 10 euros now. On such a card, you can have OLPC Sugar, Ubuntu or Debian. And guess what, these are not mutually exclusive. For proof is my experiment by Booting my EEE pc with Xubuntu running Sugar GUI borrowed from standard OLPC / XO distribution. These SD or USB storage are bootable even if they are formatted as VFAT, that means, readable on a standard Windows PC.

On top of this, Kevin’s SD card or USB key may also store a Virtual Machine application (Qemu or Virtual Box are free alternatives to VMware) which may enable him to run his own environment without rebooting daddy’s computer. Such freedom may transform PCs into a commodity where you actually boot your own environment.OLPC XO Sugar emulation fun

Speaking of which, I did some test also running OLPC XO Fedora Core-based distribution in VMware Fusion on my MacBook and it runs nicely, without crashes or else.

“Messages contradictoires, fausses identités, hacking, technologies disruptives.
